| Some reading questions will ask you to look into a passage and try to determine what can be understood from the author's words beyond what is explicitly stated (clearly said). This is commonly referred to as 'reading between the lines'. We do this all the time in conversation with others. Imagine you are at a coffee shop with a friend. You and your friend have both ordered vanilla-flavored coffees. Your friend takes a sip first, frowns, and asks if your coffee tastes right. Unless your friend is a chronic, or constant, complainer, you probably expect that your friend's coffee does not taste right, and you expect that when you take a sip your coffee will not taste right. You have inferred that the coffee you and your friend have bought does not taste right. Likewise, your friends actions have implied that her/his coffee tastes wrong. Try a few inference questions. |
